If you choose to get married by civil ceremony in a Registry Office or other approved place (by a Registrar), you should approach the Registrar of Civil Marriages for the district in which you intend to marry for information on how to proceed. There is no requirement to live in the district where you want to get married.

If you fulfill the 3 months notification requirements and there is no impediment to you getting married, the Registrar will issue you with a Marriage Registration Form (MRF) giving you permission to marry

Civil Marriage Ceremony

The marriage ceremony is governed by a Registrar, who is on the Register of Solemnisers. The ceremony must be performed in the presence of two witnesses aged over 18. During the ceremony you and your intended spouse must make two declarations:

  • That you do not know of any impediment to the marriage
  • That you accept each other as husband and wife (or other alternative).

Interpretive Services

If either you, your intended spouse or either of the two witnesses does not have sufficient knowledge of the language in which the ceremony is being held to understand the ceremony, then the services of an interpreter must be provided. It is your responsibility to provide the Interpretive services at your Civil Ceremony.

Song Suggestions for Civil Ceremony

The beauty about Civil ceremonies and Humanist ceremonies is the flexibility you have regarding your musical choices.

However in some cases hymns, songs or religious references aren’t allowed. As with any ceremony, civil, humanist or church be sure to check with your registrar or solemniser, if there are any restrictions on musical choices.

There are several places music can be woven in to your ceremony during a civil ceremony – they differ from couple to couple depending on your preferences and ceremony style.

Some areas you can include music are: the processional/entrance, –  during or after the opening readings/blessings, lighting of the candles, after the exchange of rings and vows, signing the register and the recessional.
